Carbon dioxide displacement is a common improved recovery method applied to light oil reservoirs (30-45 o API). The economic and technical success of CO 2 floods is often limited by poor sweep efficiency or large CO 2 utilization rates. Projected incremental recoveries for CO 2 floods range from 7% to 20% of the original oil in place; however, actual incremental recoveries range from 9% to 15% of the original oil in place, indicating the potential for significant additional recoveries with improved sweep efficiency. This research program was designed to study the effectiveness of carbon dioxide flooding in a mature reservoir to identify and develop methods and strategies to improve oil recovery in carbon dioxide floods. Specifically, the project has focused on relating laboratory, theoretical and simulation studies to actual field performance in a CO 2 flood in an attempt to understand and mitigate problems of areal and vertical sweep efficiency. In this work the focus has been on evaluating the status of existing swept regions of a mature CO 2 flood and developing procedures to improve the design of proposed floods. The Little Creek Field, Mississippi has been studied through laboratory, theoretical, numerical and simulation studies in an attempt to relate performance predictions to historical reservoir performance to determine sweep efficiency, improve the understanding of the reservoir response to CO 2 injection, and develop scaling methodologies to relate laboratory data and simulation results to predicted reservoir behavior. Existing laboratory information from Little Creek was analyzed and an extensive amount of field data was collected. This was merged with an understanding of previous work at Little Creek to generate …

A New Screening Evaluation Method for Carbon Dioxide Miscible Flooding Candidate Reservoirs

Prior to the implementation of CO2 injection EOR projects, the screening evaluation of candidate reservoirs will promote the economic benefits of CO2 injection. Currently, a uniform screening method for CO2 miscible flooding does not exist. Based on more than 112 successfully implemented CO2 miscible flooding reservoirs, which was referred in 2010 Worldwide EOR Survey, and CO2 miscible flooding...

Ultrasound-assisted CO2 flooding to improve oil recovery.

CO2 flooding process as a common enhanced oil recovery method may suffer from interface instability due to fingering and gravity override, therefore, in this study a method to improve the performance of CO2 flooding through an integrated ultraosund-CO2 flooding process is presented. Ultrasonic waves can deliver energy from a generator to oil and affect its properties such as internal energy and...

Oxygenator evaluation: Maxima 1380 versus Maxima Plus.

Continual improvement of oxygenators has been important in the growing demands of patient safety and support during cardiopulmonary bypass. The purpose of this study was to compare the Maxima 1380 oxygenator to the upgraded Maxima Plus oxygenator. Thirty-two adult patients were randomized to either the 1380 group or the Plus group. Information was recorded on the patients' weight, age, body sur...

Flooding the surgical field with carbon dioxide during open heart surgery improves segmental wall motion.

Air embolization to the coronary arteries is a common cause of myocardial ischemia during open heart surgery. Carbon dioxide emboli may be absorbed faster than air emboli. In this randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial, we determined that flooding the surgical field with carbon dioxide is associated with improved myocardial function assessed by transesophageal echocardiography. Fort...

CARBON DIOXIDE MINIMUM MISCIBILITY PRESSURE ESTIMATION (CASE STUDY)

Carbon dioxide flooding is considered to be one of the most effective enhanced oil recovery methods for the light oil reservoirs. Depending on the operating pressure, the process might be miscible or immiscible. Minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) is the most important parameter for assessing the applicability of any miscible gas flood for an oil reservoir. The miscibility condition is determine...
